When I finally wake again, I’m not sure how much time has passed, but my bladder is about to burst. I run to the small privy adjoining my room, and I barely make it in time.

Afterward I wash the remnant of the paste from beneath my chin and inspect the area in the mirror. Raptor’s essence did the trick—the puncture wounds have healed, leaving four tiny scars.

My mouth is horribly dry, my breath stinks, and my lips feel shriveled. I’m still dressed in the crusty bloodstained shirt and black pants. My hair is a tangled mess, and judging by the weakness in my limbs, I suspect I haven’t eaten in a couple of days.

I slept for godstars know how long. And they just—left me here. Why didn’t the Banríon wake me for the next challenge? Has she Faded? What about Lir? Is he alright?

I lunge out the door of my room. The stone hallway beyond is dimly lit by a couple of pale, flickering orbs.

My body aches from lying in bed so long, but I stumble along, determined to find someone who can give me answers.

Upon rounding a corner into a brighter hallway, I nearly collide with a servant I recognize, one of the two who usually take care of me.

“You’re awake!” she says in a tone of surprise. “We thought perhaps you had gone into some kind of human hibernation.”

“Humans don’t hibernate.”

“Ah, well, I suppose you were very tired. The Banríon gave orders that we weren’t to disturb you. I’ve been checking on you every so often. She also said that as soon as you woke up, we must prepare you for the Lúbra.”

“The Lúbra?”

“Oh yes. It’s a new game the Banríon has created.” The servant’s smile cracks at the edges. “It’s been fascinating. Many have died traversing it. We are much fewer in numbers now.”

I clutch her arm desperately. “The Favorite. Is the Favorite still alive? The pale Fae with the black wavy hair, the one who looks like a beautiful, cold prince? The one who is so uptight and honorable it’s maddening and yet endearing, too?”

The servant stares at me warily. “You mean the one we call Raven? Yes, he is still the Favorite.”

I lean against the wall, suddenly dizzy. “Thank the godstars.”

“You should eat something,” admonishes the servant. Then she sniffs delicately. “And you should bathe. Once you’re fed, cleaned, and dressed, I must take you to the Lúbra.”
